A Pier Base at Coe Hall

When you walk around Coe Hall at Planting Fields, it's easy to recognize the larger moments and stare up at those giant, sweeping archways. But honestly, some of the more interesting Tudor Revival details are right down at your feet.

Check out the stone base of this pier sitting between two arches. I had some fun documenting this chamfer stop. It resembles something like an integrated finial which I found to be quite unique. The natural wear and tear, the little cracks, and the aged patina give the stone so much character. It’s a great example of 1920s craftsmanship, showing that even the heavy structural parts of the building were designed to look amazing.
